7 Must-Buys For Pregnancy
Being pregnant isn't easy! Many expecting mothers find themselves frustrated by the changes their body undergoes. Aside from the obvious challenges that come with a growing stomach, hormones across the body run wild and cause a seemingly unlimited number of annoying problems.
However, this is not to say that these problems are unavoidable. With proper preparation, overcoming these problems is easy. So, how does one prepare for pregnancy? Here's a list of essentials that every pregnant women should own.
- A Good Calendar or Appointment Book. While a good schedule is a life-saver in general, it is especially important during pregnancy. With all the visits to the doctor, ultrasounds, baby shopping, and other challenges, it may seem like there is no time left during the day. Proper scheduling can finally free up some time for relaxation.
- Dental Care Products. Unbeknownst to many women, being pregnant increases the risk of periodontal disease. This can be easily avoided by making sure to brush and floss twice a day. Use a bland flavor of toothpaste if morning sickness causes difficulties with stronger, flavored toothpastes.
- Vitamins. Continuing on the topic of health, prenatal vitamins are very useful. Some of the vitamins and minerals the body needs during pregnancy, such as folic acid and iron, are not very common in normal diets. In some cases, a doctor will prescribe a specific type of vitamins, but for most women the drugstore varieties will work just fine.
- Lotions & Oils. Being pregnant hurts. It's unavoidable that there will be swelling and aches all across the body, but most of it can be controlled. A good massage oil can relieve aches across the body and add some oft-lacking intimacy, and lotion will relieve the swelling, especially in the feet.
- Compression Leggings. Compression leggings are one of the most important parts of any maternity outfit. Not only do they provide support and comfort, they also reduce swelling on the legs, and nobody wants swollen legs! In the summer, wear them alone. In the cold weather, wear them under jeans.
Note: Don't accidentally buy the leggings that are meant for sports. Make sure they are built for pregnancy before buying any.
- Maternity Underwear & Bra. As the stomach grows, so does everything else. Unfortunately, this includes cup sizes. A proper pair of maternity underwear and a few support bras will feel much, much better than just buying larger sizes and hoping it works out. Over time, a few different sizes of bras are probably going to be necessary, depending on the extent of the growth.
- Comfortable Shoes. Even with foot lotion, pregnancy is going to lead to swollen feet. Swollen feet don't work well with high heels, flats, or most other shoes. Slippers are the most comfortable choice, but nobody wants to wear slippers to the store. Try buying a pair of cheap sneakers that are a size or two too large to wear for running errands.
Most importantly, don't get overwhelmed trying to prepare for everything and lose track of life. Pregnancy is a confusing time, and no amount of preparation can truly prepare someone for all the changes. However, a good schedule, proper attention to health, and the right apparel are certainly a good start!
