The Cold Cream
It was originally created by a 2nd century Greek physician using olive oil, beeswax and rosewater and hit cult status during the early 1920’s to the 1950’s. Cold creams were the ‘must have’ item for every fabulous flapper and who could resist with great advertising lines like “She’s Engaged, She’s Lovely, She uses Ponds”, “Lines say over 30!” and “Find Your Real Complexion in just 7 days”.
Looking past the corny advertising slogans cold Creams are hardworking multi taskers. They’re an oil based cleanser, moisturiser and hydrating mask all in one.
Here are 4 ways you can use a cold cream
1. Make Up remover – To keep it simple: oils dissolve oils. So even after a big night cold creams can usually make light work of stubborn mascara.
2. Daily Facial Cleanser– A great way to cleanse the day away without being harsh on your skin. All you need to do is apply a liberal amount, massage it around and wipe it off.
3. Skin Conditioner – Have you got dry heels, elbows or knees? Rub some cold cream on the dry spots and give those areas some extra moisture.
4. Hydrating face mask – You may look like Mrs Doubtfire after plonking you head into a frosted cake but it will leave your skin feeling well moisturised.
But let’s not fall head over heels for this wonder cream just yet.
Even though the very 1st cold cream formula was all-natural, modern methods have turned it into a concoction of less desirable ingredients. Common cold creams of today are all based on mineral oil or paraffin which is an ingredient many people wish to avoid and I am one of them.
Luckily for us the natural and organic versions are making a comeback. However they are probably not called a cold cream cleanser. You will find they are leading different lives as cleansing balms and cleansing butters.
