Price Tag: Money Story
There are so many phrases out there about money: “Money makes the world go round”; “It’s the root of all evil”; “Here is a proven model which will have you earning £10,000 plus a month”. So it is all around us, and is being projected out there in different ways. In turn these projections are being picked up by our receptors, which then get converted into a belief and stored in our subconscious.
Inherited Beliefs
Like with other beliefs, fears or phobias we can either pick them up from our own experiences or other people’s experiences – for example our parents. You may have come from a household were your parents may have told you, “money is tight, so we cannot afford to buy you this latest brand”. This message of the “lack” of money may have been imprinted into your mind.
“Money Makes the World go Round”
Whereas, it is true that we use money to acquire things, satisfy a need and obtain a lifestyle – it is just a currency, one we use as a form of exchange.
“You cannot survive on air”
As human beings, we are creatures of needs. To have shelter, food and clothing as Maslow was describing at the bottom part of his pyramid. So this then begs the question: how can we satisfy these needs? The rhetorical answer would be money! So here is goes again, the “M” word. Money is not a really a bad word. But that word can be associated with negative connotations. These negative thoughts can stop you from having a good relationship with money.
“It is all about the relationship”
Yes, it is all about the relationship baby. People often say, “I do not have enough money”. This last statement is focusing on lack, and the law of attraction states that if you focus on something then it will bring more of it. Talking about relationships, in order to discover the “why”, here is a question: what is your money story? This is the money version to the love equivalent. Being able to identify with your “truth” will bring clarity as to why these patterns have been occurring.
Possible money stories
- “Money does not come easily, it is hard to come by”. This thought may have been implanted into our minds by our parents, when they were describing to us that in order to achieve things, you must remain focused and put the work in. Do you notice the word easy? What is the opposite of easy? Difficult. If things are “hard” to come by, people may not be enjoying the process. When you do not have happy thoughts about something, does it bring a positive outcome?
- “I keep overspending and going further into debt”. So your relationship to money may be emotional. You may be trying to fill a void or lack. Some argue that it can be in relation to lack of self-esteem. So that topic of self-love is coming up.
- “Only the bad, the corrupted and criminals seem to have the money”. So you are saying that money is limited if you earn an “honest” living. This is an example of a myth that is not serving you, and so perhaps needs to be dispelled.
- “I must remain in a 9-5 job to remain financially stable”. From this mindset, you may be suggesting that you have to make sacrifices in order to sustain a living. You may be compromising other needs, for example doing a job that you love, where you are serving your purpose. So yes you can, do a job that is aligned with your spiritual needs and receive money as Marie Forleo discussed in one of her YouTube videos.
This list is not exhaustive. You can enjoy this process of self-discovery in determining what your money story is. Have fun.
Talking about fun, this can be your “sweet spot” – how you make the shift from not receiving and being abundant.
Note: Perhaps talk about how we pick up our beliefs about money? Only if you want to!
The Sweet Spot – my money story
After identifying your role with money then the next step is to:
- Accept it; take responsibility.
- Define what you would like your story to be like. It should be a positive one. An example of this to change mindset, “I love writing inspiring articles and bringing happiness to my readers. How can it get any better than this, doing something that I love doing?”
So question: what is your money story?
