The importance of understanding your children with the 5 Languages of Love

Being a child is all about learning and developing and as parents it is our job to help our children to grow into well-balanced adults, and the best versions of themselves. In our family, love and communication is key, and it’s from a young age that studies have proven integral to learning this. I whole-heartedly believe that the first three years are essential to a child’s development, and it’s with this stat in mind that I’ve focused on brining my 22month old up with the 5 Languages of Love, from the novel by Gary Chapman.

Herbal healer and founder of natural aphrodisiac product range, Miracle Minded www.miracleminded.com.au, Liz Stringer explains the 5 Languages of Love:

1. Words of Affirmation: It is known that children are very intuitive and can pick up on vibes and feelings from others, so being positive and using words of affirmation is a great way to encourage and build positive thought patterns.

2. Acts of Service: For children, actions speak louder than words (and for adults too when you think about it). As they are still learning how to communicate what they want and need verbally, it’s important to demonstrate and lead through actions. Showing your love by helping them and attending to their needs is a great way to demonstrate that you will always be there for them, but also teaches them good habits for the future. Do you ever do things now that remind you of your parents? Well, that’s where it all began.

3. Receiving Gifts: Everyone loves receiving gifts, but making that gift special is what it’s all about. Ensure that the gift isn’t just anything, but it is something that is meaningful and something they can take with them through life. You don’t have to spend a lot to give a great gift, and it’s not about spoiling them, but it’s about gifting them with something that they love and will cherish.

4. Quality Time: Quality time with the kids is priceless. Giving your children your undivided attention may be difficult when you’re trying to juggle work with a family, but it’s important to separate the two. Put your phone and the laptop away and appreciate the time you have with them – they grow up so quickly and the time you spend with them at a young age is invaluable. It’s something you don’t want to regret later in life.

5. Physical Touch: To children, nothing speaks more deeply than the appropriate touch. A simple hug, a kiss, or a helping hand means the world to them, as it shows them your love and support. It is particularly important to make skin-to-skin contact with newborn babies, as it helps calm them and makes them feel safe.
