What Makes An Ideal Article

Author

Because we get such a lot of requests to guest post on our site, I've put together the following information that may assist you in deciding if your writing is a match to us.

What types of content do we publish?

We prefer to publish articles from experts and coaches who are working with clients successfully using the techniques that they write about. Unfortunately, this means that we publish less often than we'd like.

Case studies and anecdotal stories are usually a good fit, and personal experience often makes a good story. Check out our Writing Tips below.

We prefer to publish authors who are already published on reputable sites rather than someone who has decided they'd like to try it out, or anyone who is writing to promote products, or medical and related services.

We occasionally publish work from content and copy writers who are not using the expertise they write about in their work. But if the purpose of wanting to write for Smart Healthy Women is for link-building, then you'll see in our guidelines that all links on SHW are no-follow, so we're probably not going to be a match.

Please view our Guest Writer Agreement page, which outlines our terms and requirements to feature your work.

Ok, that's all good?

If you are agree with our guidelines as mentioned, then please email us at info@smarthealthywomen.com with an initial synopsis of an article you'd like us to feature. Be sure to include links to previously published work and any credentials that underline your experience in your topics.

If we feel your submission is a match to our site, we will be in touch.

Writing Tips

We're excited that you are expanding your influence and reach to assist more women around the world with quality information and strategies that work.

There is an art to crafting an article or other information piece, that will have the most impact and gain you the audience you need. The following tips will make it easier to have your work accepted at Smart Healthy Women and other publications.

Start with SEO in mind

A clear SEO structure is critical to your ideal clients finding, reading and sharing your article. But the science of well-done SEO daunts many writers, and so it often gets ignored. There is a lot of information on the web to help you in this regard, so I encourage you to explore as much about this important topic as possible.

Take these tips from Yoast SEO. Firstly, make sure your average 13-15 year old can read and understand your article. To do so, check your Fleisch Readability Score here.

Secondly, use subheadings to break up long articles. This makes it easy for your reader to scan your article to decide if it contains the information she wants to see.

Thirdly, be sure to use active voice in preference to passive voice. Active voice is generally considered clearer and easier to read.

Fourthly, keep your sentences under 20 words and your paragraphs under 150 words. A great tool for analysing the readability of your article is The Hemmingway App.

Understand what search terms people use to find your services, and use these words where possible. Include them in the title, description and throughout your article. It is tempting to stack search terms throughout the article when trying to boost SEO. However it is even more important that your article is easy to read and delivers on the promise in your title.

Be Yourself

Your readers will connect with you absolutely and utterly if you turn up as yourself – warts and all. Authenticity is the first key to connecting with the people you want to work with. Be honest, if you have struggled with an issue, let your readers know. Don't try to be ‘perfect', there is no such thing and your readers know this.

Relate to your reader

Your readers want to know “how to” overcome their problems and issues. Give them strategies that they can put in place and succeed at – the simpler the better. It is better to provide 3-5 short tasks that they can finish and get tangible results from than providing a long list of instructions that they will not complete, if they don't get immediate results from the first one. Make sure the information you provide in your piece solves a pressing issue that your clients experience.

Connect to your reader

The title of your article is the most important key to getting your ideal client to learn what you do and how you can help them. Ask yourself: would you want to read this article? Does the title compel you to read it? Solve a problem for your ideal reader and give them a reason to seek more from you.

Take your reader on a journey

The best articles and stories take the reader on a journey. To catch the reader's attention, you have to capture their imagination from the moment they see the title of your article. You then need to keep their attention and deliver on your promise. Present a problem, then hold their hand as you take them through the solution(s) to a satisfactory result.

Have your systems in place

It is not enough to have a raving audience of fans who happen to be your ideal clients. You need to feed and nurture the relationships you forge with your writing, and keep in touch with your readers. Don’t let them feel neglected and go looking elsewhere for the fulfilment of the promise they felt when they first connected to you.
