I don't know if you've noticed it, but I've observed a health trend in the food industry for some time where certain food items are given cult status and credited with all sorts of miraculous cures and astounding results.
You've seen them – things like coconut oil, bone broth, kombucha, quinoa, kefir, goji berries, chia seeds, apple cider vinegar and the list goes on….
Now I am not saying that the health properties of these foods are in question – quite the opposite in fact. But what I want to see is a balanced and authentic view of what these foods and food substances can take credit for and what are likely myths about their miraculous properties.
So we have gathered some expert opinions on what constitutes real healthy and ‘super' food and included them in this, our Food Fetish issue.
To start with, nutritionist Caroline Silk answers the question of “Is it a Superfood or a Superfad?”, followed by nutrition coach Kiran Ram who shows us which are the stars in the superfood arena and why.
Fitness expert and advocate for women's health Lyn Collett offers a commonsense approach to nutrition that can be adopted by everyone. We then welcome public health nutritionist Luke Daley who discusses what is truth and what is hype with the most popular superfoods in the market today.
Author of “Summer Table” Jodie Blight shows us how to blend easy changes into your family's meal routine to up your nutritional quotient and Health Coach Trissyann Tracey shows us the many and varied uses of coconut oil and how it is much much more than a kitchen staple.
Rebecca Kane, raw food expert and author, shows us how to make family meals a fun-packed and nutritious celebration of health.
Finally, your editor discusses why it's important to consult the first authority when making health choices – your body while also providing a yummy tropical super food smoothie that will have your taste buds and your whole body singing.
As you can see, there are many points of view regarding the benefit of superfood and healthy eating, so I invite you to find out what works for you – we are really spoilt for choice today in the market and there is really no excuse to have a poor diet!
